Eating Squirrels and the Macho Jesus

Two articles from the NYT caught my eye. The first is on the trend being seen in Great Britain that has folks eating squirrel meat. I find it fascinating because the article seems to suggest that there is some form of exoticism in doing so. Considering I have squirrel meat in the freezer (yes, from ones that I shot), I don’t find it so odd. Hat tip to Homegrown Evolution for pointing this one out.

So while I was on the website of the liberal elite, I found an interesting article about Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. As a mission developer, I find the notion that his church started a little over a decade ago in his living room pretty cool, especially considering there are now like 7,000 in attendance. I also like the fact that tattooed freaks like me aren’t banned. Like Mark, I do object in some ways to Jesus being treated like a proto-hippy.

At the same time, I can’t get with him on some of his other stances. Calvinism sucks (sorry Presby-Reformed readers), and I am not so sure that being faithful means taking a giant dump on women or dehumanizing gay people.  Isn’t this the same dude that blamed Ted Haggard’s homosexual affair and meth use on Ted’s wife? Classy.

As you might guess, I do not care for Driscoll. At least the things I’ve heard from him…

Nothing wrong with eating squirrel though. I used to go squirrel hunting a lot when I was kid. Not so much now… But these people who say “it tastes like chicken” when confronted with any “exotic” meat, make me crazy…

So–I gotta ask… What’s your favorite load for hunting squirrel?

Derek – i still find the .22lr or .410 shotgun the best. i make the boy take his .22 to work on his marksmanship.

i did take low brass 2 3/4 inch birdshot in 12 gauge out this year, which does the job ok, you just have to be more careful with shot selection so as not to tear up all the meat.

there is a new high powered air gun out in .177 that is supposed to shoot something like 1300 fps that i would love to try out.

I was thinking .22, perhaps with rat shot… Looked like the kid in the video had a .410 and I couldn’t imagine going much larger than that.

    (Never gone after squirrel myself)

If you can successfully hunt squirrel with a 22lr, you can hunt anything! KUDOS for not using too much firepower! (and ruining the meat!)

Actually, traditional snout to tail is making a comeback in the UK as folks there are learning to re-appreciate their roots. So rather than being exotic, as a know-nothing foodie liberal types might have it, it’s a return to old ways. Squab, ox heart, and squirrel, O my!
